Carole Bell on BBC News 24 (26 July)

I was interviewed by the legendary Peter Sissons on BBC News 24 this afternoon after having cheered for Obama in the morning. If you listen carefully to his press conference in front of Number 10, you can hear the UK's largest group of Obama supporters chanting his name at the gates of Downing Street.

BBC Five Live

I heard you on BBCFive Live during the night. Seriously, you appeared to me to be drunk. Would this be an excuse for (directly or indirectly) referring to the good and decent Senator John McCain as "an ugly narrow American"? Were you, as it appeared, referring directly to him, or is it simply that your view of ALL Americans is the equivalent to that held by Michelle Obama? Eamonn Gavin, Dublin, Ireland.

Thank You for Your Comment

Dear Eamonn,

You have misinterpreted the remarks I made during the Radio Five Live interview, and have taken them out of context.  I do not believe what you said in your comment about John McCain, so could not have implied that.  You are also mistaken about what you present as factual views held by Michelle Obama, whose remarks you have misinterpreted as well.

I'm offended by your suggestion that I was drunk.

I think you've been grossly unfair about the way I was treated by the host and the other speaker, who were in the studio, while I was on the other end of a phone line.

Your McCain bias shows throughout your comment.  So much for listening with a fair and open mind.

That the majority of callers, each themselves British,  so extensively praised Barack Obama, and repeatedly cited what a fresh breath of air he is to the world, must have been a huge disappointment to you.

Carole

*Please Note*
The BBC News 24 television interview in this story took place Saturday afternoon, after the morning when I organized an event with Obama supporters at 10 Downing Street, to greet Barack Obama when he arrived, and when he left after meeting with Prime Minister Gordon Brown.

The comment refers to an interview that took place at 11 o'clock Saturday night, on BBC Radio Five Live, in an international radio broadcast. -- Carole

BBC "FIVE LIVE" INTERVIEW

Dear Carole, Thank you for your (admittedly unexpected) reply. Firstly, may I say that I did NOT say you were drunk. I said that it appeared to ME that you were drunk. And it so did. I have already stated that if you were not drunk, I apologise. The fact remains that TO ME you appeared to be inebriated. Secondly, I did not say, or imply, that I listened with an open and fair mind. For the record, I did NOT so do. I did not, for the simple reason that I consider Barack Obama to be arrogant, presumptious and vacuous, whereas I consider Senator McCain to be serious and proven presidential material. I would go so far as to consider Senator Obama, as president, to be a threat to the future of western civilization as we know it, albeit admittedly unintentionally so. As for your good self, YOU certainly do not speak with "an open and fair mind" when discussing the presidential contest. Thirdly, you used the words "ugly, narrow American", apparently, both to me and the presenter and other guest, in reference to Senator McCain. You refused/declined to clarify to whom you were referring: could you now take the opportunity to clear up this serious matter? With regard to Mrs. Obama, I do not have to remind anybody with an "open and fair mind" that she has repeatedly insulted the American people. Perhaps the "open and fair mind" qualification disqualifies you from realising this. Finally, I was not at all disappointed that some callers apparently, like yourself, sought to deify Senator Obama. However, fortunately, Europeans will not decide who will be the next president of The United States. Their general apathy has already ensured that, without a miracle, the future of Europe as we know it is extremely dubious. The American people will see to it that the Right man is their next president. Eamonn, Dublin, Ireland.

I was directed to this site

I was directed to this site to see this video, which I thought was an absolutely amazing interview. I scanned your comments a few times before commenting. Your feigned outrage is laughable, and for someone who tries to come off as informed, you certainly don't make any attempt to win anyone over with logic. Firstly: To say someone appears drunk is enough to be offensive. You're saying that they look incoherent and stupid. It's like saying someone looks pregnant when they aren't. The only other alternative is to apologize? Why? Because we all know that it implies that they look fat...you just didn't say it directly. By the way, I saw nowhere in your comment an apology, just a defense for making an unfounded and hyperbolic statement. Secondly: You don't have to listen to anything, with an open mind. That's your decision and we all have that right. However, it merely implies that you're not open to learning anything new, anyway...that you know everything you already want to know, and rejecting ahead of time anything you don't. Just to let you know, it doesn't make for a convincing argument when you try to convince people of something when it doesn't look like you came to an informed decision yourself. Believing someone is arrogant is your own business. Many times, however, that says more about the person coming to that conclusion than the person being judged. I have yet to see your references to how Obama would unintentionally destroy the Western world as we know it. That's a pretty clear crystal ball you might have there. Thirdly: Well, I just have no idea what you're referring to about the "ugly, narrow american". I will comment that many here in America do see McCain's views as ugly AND narrow. Especially when they compare it to the McCain beliefs of, oh say, 2000. If you lived in America, you would realize that the American press could turn a door slam from Paris Hilton into an insulting action. They would say that Paris is way too rich and doesn't believe poor people have the common courtesy to a polite door-shutting. I wonder if you saw the full clips or the edited versions? I was not insulted, and the majority of America was not insulted. The media elite were desperate and latched on to anything they could. It was sensationalism, something you seem to admire. Finally: I can't help that you believe that some people are willing to deify Obama. You can't help that they are. For the rest of us, we're willing to work for our collective futures in spite of (and because of) what the naysayers will always say. This comparisons and critiques will keep being made....why stop working? America will see that the right man is their president, you can bet on it. Jason. New York, NY

To: Jason

Hi Jason, May I explain something to you, as there would appear to be some sort of misunderstanding on your part. If you read the bottom of my 2 earlier messages, you will see that I have signed myself "Eamonn Gavin, Dublin, Ireland" and, in the second one, "Eamonn, Dublin, Ireland". Now, if you have a look at my messages and Carole's messages, you will then see that you appear to be addressing each of us at various points of your comment and attributing various statements to each of us, but confusing the two. I say this in all politeness, as you appear to have made a genuine mistake - easily done when just glancing at a comment board. By the way, it was I who said that I had apologised earlier if Carole was not drunk in the interview to which I referred. That interview was on RADIO, BBC Five Live to be exact, not the TV one referred to on British television. You will see that Carole made that clear. Readers will not have seen my apology, because it was made in a personal email to Carole: I said that if she was not drunk in the radio interview, I apologise. Jason, you say that I made an "unfounded" statement, presumably referring to my comment about "drunk". My comment was simply that TO ME CAROLE APPEARED TO BE DRUNK IN HER RADIO INTERVIEW. That was my own opinion and was clearly expressed as such. Surely you must realise that one gains an impression and to simply state that as your IMPRESSION cannot be an "unfounded statement". With regard to my comment about Senator Obama not being good for the future of western civilization, that belief is based on my opinion of how he would deal with the threat of Islamism. If this threat is not handled properly, Islamism will be victorious. I do not believe that Obama would handle it properly. My opinion! I do not claim that it is necessarily the RIGHT opinion, all I claim is that it is MY opinion. Finally, the "ugly, narrow American" Those were Carole's words in her RADIO interview, not mine. I just asked her to clarify if she meant Senator McCain, which I and the radio presenter and the other guest clearly thought that she DID. Perhaps Carole will clarify WHO she meant. Best Wishes to all. Eamonn, Dublin, Ireland.

Nice!!!

You showed him!!! :)

A Man?

"You showed HIM"? Carole Bell is a MAN?

Very nicely done, you held

Very nicely done, you held your own and you were very informative. Kudos to you and to OBAMA

((Carole))!!!!!

you just shut him down answering the bogus offshore drilling question!!!! The look on his face was priceless... donation to your FR tonight! Paula in Appalachia Kentucky

"That the majority of

"That the majority of callers, each themselves British, so extensively praised Barack Obama, and repeatedly cited what a fresh breath of air he is to the world, must have been a huge disappointment to you." That they did! How many of them will be voting in November? It is not realistic to base Obama's electoral success on how he does "over here" -- these are not Americans (other than ex-pats). Europe is far more liberal than the US.

Nailing the moronic questions

Oh WOW do you know how to nail pundits ganging up on you or what??? LOL just awesome, and you do it with a smile and an upbeat tone. They always seem to be pissed off by the end and kinda deflated LOOOOL probably saying "well she showed me" But my favorite one was when you basically told the pundit how stupid his oil drilling comment was by informing him how many rigs there are that we still can use for decades without having to ruin the coastlines of so many states--I think his inner dialogue at that moment was "SHIT" when you commented on that one LOL Great job, keep it up Zena

Well done

I thought that was a tough interview. It was almost as though you had to be Barak Obama yourself! I thought you gave some really good answers, I think Barak would be proud!
