Bush Invites Obama To Meeting Today; Obama Accepts

“A few moments ago, President Bush called Senator Obama and asked him to attend a meeting in Washington tomorrow, which he agreed to do.

"Senator Obama has been working all week with leaders in Congress, Secretary Paulson, and Chairman Bernanke to improve this proposal, and he has said that he will continue to work in a bipartisan spirit and do whatever is necessary to come up with a final solution.

"He strongly believes the debate should go forward on Friday so that the American people can hear from their next President about how he will lead America forward at this defining moment for our country,” said Obama-Biden spokesman Bill Burton.

Debate Perspective from Wellington, New Zealand

Carole - We watched the debate in a packed room upstairs at a popular pub here in Wellington. The facility was reserved by Erin Howell of Democrats Abroad here in New Zealand. All of the partisan spinning aside and forgetting about who won or lost I think that one thing was definitely made clear: Obama's performance demolished the Republicans contention that he is an empty suit and cannot speak extemporaneously. I thought his high point was in reminding McCain that the Iraq war did not begin with the surge in 2007 but was preceded by 4 years of Bush administration incompetence and that McCain also believed, like Dick Cheney that American troops would be greeted as heroes by the Iraqis. I think he missed a good opportunity to go after McCain and his obsession with the belief that fighting earmarks will be the hallmark of a McCain administration's prudent spending, since earmarks constitute less than 10% of federal government spending. Otherwise this was a great moment for Obama. David L. Dann

Hello David in New Zealand!

Hi David!  Thank you for your comments on the debate.

It's great to hear about your debate watch in New Zealand.  Fortunately, both first and second day reaction to the debate showed Obama did much better than McCain with voters and particularly, with independent voters.

It's nice to have a New Zealand correspondent!
